The seminary was designed by Isi
Metzstein and Andy McMillan of Gillespie Kidd and Coia,
built in 1966, and was awarded the prestigious RIBA
Bronze Regional Medal. The college closed in 1980 when
it began its long decline into decay and ruin. The building
was subsequently Grade ‘A’ listed as a Building
of Special Architectural or Historical Interest.
Today the building still stands in its ruined state
and has been the subject of many failed plans for redevelopment
and restoration.
“St.
Peter’s Cardross is arguably the finest modern
building in Scotland.”
Dr
Gavin Stamp, Architectural Historian.
When
six of Scotland’s leading architects were asked
in a recent Sunday Herald interview (for an article
on the BBC2 programme Restoration) which building they
would save, given the chance, three of them suggested
St. Peter’s Seminary in Cardross.
As a building that we have had an interest in for some
time this seemed the ideal launch project for Virtual
Restoration. |
